Alphabet to launch Waymo driverless service in Los Angeles

Waymo, Alphabet’s driverless ride-hailing service, confirmed on Friday that it has applied for a regulator license to launch this service in Los Angeles.

The autonomous car company said that a license would allow Waymo to operate freely in Los Angeles and it is now testing rides in the state via invitation rides.

Waymo wrote on its X account that it has applied to the California Public Utilities Commission “to extend our driverless deployment service, and we’ll continue our work w/ local policymakers, first responders and community organizations.”.

The ride-hailing service provider does not provide any details on the final launch date. Further, it is planning to test fully autonomous passenger cars in Phoenix, Arizona, Austin, and Texas.

Autonomous car driving technology has become quite suspicious after Cruise, an autonomous driving project of General Motors, was involved in an accident and collided and injured a pedestrian in October 2023. Later that month, San Francisco canceled the license for self-driving robotaxi.
