Tesla cancelled hyped Cybertruck range extender

In a turn of events, Tesla has cancelled its long-awaited range extender for Cybertruck electric semi-truck owners, which was promoted alongside the vehicle.

This accessory was designed to provide additional battery power to increase the driving range, and it could be placed in the truck bed area. Simply put, it was an additional battery pack.

It was brought to address the shortfall in Cybertruck’s 500+ miles range, promised in 2019. The company first announced this at the Cybertruck Delivery Event on November 2023. The current versions listed on the configurator are Long Range, All Wheel Drive and Cyberbeast offering 350 miles, 325 miles, and 301 miles driving range respectively.

The range extender could’ve taken these figures close to the promised range with a hefty price of $16,000 in the US and $500 reservation deposit.

The extender was expected to launch somewhere in 2024, but its production was delayed to early 2025. In a later version of this notification for users, the company changed this production date to mid-2025.

Tesla has not shared any reason for cancelling the range extender in the email received by Cybertruck owners, instead, it has promised to refund the deposit amount with an apology.

“We are no longer planning to sell the Range Extender for Cybertruck. As a result, we will be refunding your deposit in full. The amount will be returned to the original payment method used for the transaction” wrote Tesla in the mail.

Some speculations about the cancellation suggest that Tesla may be searching for alternative options to expand the range, such as improving 4680 cells used in the vehicle to achieve more efficiency. Still, we’re waiting for an official response in this matter.
