Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company is targeting June 22 to launch Robotaxi services in Austin, Texas, but vehicles involved need to meet certain safety parameters to make this happen.

Musk explained that the Tesla team is focusing on the safety aspect of these robotaxis, and this tentative launch date could shift based on the results of the ongoing testing.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk Tentative June 22 Robotaxi Launch

Earlier today, a Model Y robotaxi was spotted roaming in Austin, which had a “Robotaxi” sticker and no human driver. Musk said that the test vehicle was unmodified factory spec new Model Y, running unsupervised full self driving (FSD).

He said such cars are coming directly from the manufacturing facility, which means the current production is capable of driving itself off the final assembly.

Robotaxis are autonomous driving vehicles designed to provide ride-hailing and passenger services to customers. Tesla announced its plans to enter this market at last year’s We Robot event after unveiling autonomous driving technologies and a dedicated ride-hailing vehicle, Cybercab.

The company will use unsupervised FSD, which doesn’t require human intelligence to monitor the vehicle’s maneuvers on the road.

Tesla has received approval to test Robotaxis in Austin and was recently listed as a known autonomous vehicle operator in the city. According to the information, Tesla initially plans to release at least 10-20 autonomous vehicles. If everything goes in the right direction for safety and testing, the numbers will grow to thousands within a year.

A report from Bloomberg previously alleged that Tesla could launch robotaxi on June 12, while the EV maker remained mum on any specific dates until Musk’s new tentative June 22 launch statement.

Besides, Tesla also has a plan to utilize its unsupervised FSD for self-driving vehicle delivery.

“First Tesla that drives itself from factory end of line all the way to customer house is June 28” added Musk.

Conclusion

Such initial launches take time; it would be a surprise if we see a robotaxi making a first official appearance on June 22 or this month, but a delay is highly possible.
