For the first time in history, a car autonomously delivered itself to the customer
For the first time in the history of the automotive industry, Tesla has achieved a milestone that no other car company has ever attempted when a new Model Y autonomously delivered itself to the customer.
Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, announced on X that the first fully self-driven delivery of Model Y is completed. The car drove from the factory to the customer by going across the town including highways.
“Congratulations to the @Tesla_AI teams, both software & AI chip design!” Musk wrote on X.
Tesla vehicle uses Full Self Driving (FSD) to navigate, while detecting road signs, traffic lights, pedestrians, and other on-road scenarios. The customer version of this technology is supervised, which means the driver is required to monitor the car’s driving maneuvers.
On June 22, the company launched Robotaxi in Austin, Texas, featuring unsupervised full self-driving. The new Model Y is employed for autonomous ride-hailing without requiring human monitoring.
Musk said, the newly delivered car had no people inside and nor was it teleoperated at any point of the journey to the address.
“To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a fully autonomous drive with no people in the car or remotely operating the car on a public highway,” Musk added.
Tesla has set a goal to deliver the first vehicle with full self-driving on June 28, and this milestone has now been completed a day earlier.
The customer named Jose (on X) also shared a reaction, saying that the company had called him all of a sudden to ask if he wanted to be part of the autonomous delivery, and he agreed. Group photos posted by the customer confirmed that the top Tesla officials also met him after delivery.

In Austin
More information on this matter reveals that Tesla autonomously delivered the first car in Austin, the same place where it is allowed to drive Robotaxis.
Autonomous deliveries are no different than Robotaxi operations, which means these will also fall under the same constrained of public safety. Therefore, we may see such actions in places where Tesla is authorized to ride robotaxis. However, an official confirmation is awaited on further expansion.
