Tesla Semi Factory: Everything you need to know

Tesla is building a Semi factory in Nevada to produce its semi-electric trucks for customers. This plant will play a pivotal role in meeting the customer demand, and here’s everything you need to know about this major facility.
Tesla first proposed the Semi in 2016’s master plan, outlining a larger vehicle for partners. In the following year, the company unveiled two concepts at a press conference, considered a major milestone in the program.
The initial production was set for 2019, but supply chain issues have delayed it for the next two to three years. In October 2022, Tesla commenced production and delivered pilot units to PepsiCo by the end of that year. This Semi fleet achieved 425 miles of range for food and 100 miles for sodas in the pilot testing.
To conduct a volume production, Tesla announced an expansion to the Gigafactory Nevada for Semis in January 2023 as a part of a $3.6 billion investment. The factory expands 1.7 million square feet and targets 50,000 Tesla Semi trucks once it’s fully operational.

“We’re prepping for mechanical installation of all the equipment in the coming months. The first builds of the high-volume Semi design come late this year in 2025 and begin ramping early in 2026,” said Lars Moravy, VP of Vehicle Engineering said in January 2025.
In the first quarter of this year, the construction concluded, making way for the final phase.
Dan Priestly, Head of Tesla Semi Program, reaffirmed that the company is committed to scaling this truck in 2026, with first units coming in late 2025.

As of the first quarter, the Tesla Semi program has collected 7 million cumulative miles for a fleet of 26 Semis, 100,000 miles each. Tesla is also investing $100 million in charging infrastructure for these vehicles with faster charging capability.
