Tesla Robotaxi users share autonomous driving experience in rain

Tesla continues to host autonomous ride-hailing services through its Robotaxi in Austin, and the latest visuals shared on the social media site X showed the vehicle moving efficiently in heavy rain.
These short clips on the platform show how the vehicle navigated through the road alongside human drivers, even in severe downpours. Users also confirmed that the vehicle didn’t pull over during their ride, and the clips confirmed that.
Tesla is using the refreshed Model Y for robotaxi operations, which equips 9 on-board cameras. Compared to Waymo, which has different sensors and a LiDAR system, Tesla has decided to remain on the vision system. The camera captures the view and sends it over to the onboard computer to process in real-time to navigate.
The EV maker confirmed that the vehicle has no modifications, and all of the hardware in the robotaxi is the same as the customer vehicle. However, the key change is the software.

Robotaxis are using Unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, which doesn’t require a human to monitor the car’s movement in public, which is the opposite of the Supervised version for the consumer version. FSD can drive the vehicle anywhere on the road, and with the latest improvements, it can do the same in the rain.

Weather like rain poses a visibility challenge for camera-based self-driving systems. It can obscure the view with water droplets, dirt, or debris, and blur the imagery input to sensors. This situation could cause the vehicle to miss road signs, markings, obstacles, and other traffic. However, early reviews of the robotaxi ride in this weather are quite positive.
For now, the Tesla Robotaxi services are limited to invite invite-only terms, allowing a few customers to access autonomous rides in a geofenced area in Austin. These invitees are provided with early access to the robotaxi app to order a ride from start to end point. The company has not announced public access to the robotaxi for the time being.
