Rivian launches its own navigation system with Google Maps for EVs
Rivian and Google have announced a new navigation system featuring Google Maps for electric vehicles (EVs), designed for users who opt for Google Maps Auto SDK. The dedicated SDK allows car makers to bring a custom navigation system and build their features powered by Google Maps.
It means these custom navigation can leverage all that Google Maps has to offer, from technology to real-time information. Specifically, the Rivian navigation system will include the following features:
Fresh routes and traffic: These two will providethe fastest route to maintain your ETA and it could also reroute to find even a quicker way during the drive.
Real-time road disruption notifications: You will get informed with real-time disruption reports about lane closures for construction or an accident.
Tappable POIs: Users can now tap on places of interest right on the map and learn more about hours, reviews, and contact information with just a tap. This experience is based on Rivian’s existing place search experience that uses Google Maps’ information about 250 million places around the world. In addition to the 2d view, Rivian customers can now use satellite imagery from Google Maps.
One of the major advantages of this integration is that Rivian can retain its software design, including EV charger information, charging planning, and scores, while taking information from Google Maps.
Rivian navigation system with Google Maps is rolling out for all R1S and R1T vehicles starting today via over-the-air (OTA) 2025.22 software update.
