OpenAI has launched Instant Checkout, a new feature that allows you to buy products directly from ChatGPT and pay for them instantly without moving to a third-party payment service.

This new tool is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol and built with Stripe. You can now buy from U.S. Etsy sellers within the conversation, including from a million+ Shopify merchants such as Glossier, SKIMS, SpanX, and Vuori. More. For now, OpenAI has released instant checkout support with single-item purchases. The company will soon expand this with a multi-item cart purchase.

Along with this feature rollout, the AI firm has open-sourced Agentic Commerce Protocol, the technology behind Instant Checkout, to allow others to build their integrations. It is an open standard for AI commerce that enables AI agents, people, and businesses to work in harmony to complete purchases.

How to use

Go to ChatGPT and ask the AI to give you some product suggestions with a price cap, for example, “Can you help me find a great housewarming gift for my friend? Maybe handmade, ceramic dinnerware, in white and tan, under $100”.

The AI will get to work and search for the most relevant products on the web and return the results. Supported products will show the Instant Checkout feature with the Buy option. Existing users can pay with their card on file or another card and express payment options.

Order, payments, and fulfillment are managed by the merchant through their existing systems, and ChatGPT clarifies that it’s only a mediator that’s presenting the service. The Instant Payment feature is rolling out for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users in the U.S.
