OpenAI launches parental controls for ChatGPT users

Published

on

OpenAI has launched the parental controls feature for ChatGPT users, allowing them to link their account to their teen’s account to customize settings to improve privacy and safety as they interact with AI. The company said that this new step will make the age-appropriate content consumption even better than before.

You can set up parent controls by sending an invite link to connect the teen’s account. Similarly, teens can also invite a parent. Once the invitation is accepted, parents can customize the ChatGPT on a dedicated Parental Controls menu in the account’s settings page. Afterwards, parents will receive a notification if a teen unlikes their account.

The teen account will get some default content restrictions, such as reduced graphics content, viral challenges, sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay, and extreme beauty ideals. Parents can tweak these content settings, but teens can’t.

These default options are introduced with an additional set of content moderation rules, including:

  • Quiet hours – ChatGPT can’t be used during a scheduled time.
  • Voice mode – You can remove the option for voice mode.
  • Memory – Don’t allow ChatGPT to remember your teen’s conversation for responses.
  • Image generation – Stop ChatGPT from generating images.
  • Model training – Stop OpenAI from training on your teen’s conversation.

Similar to the default rules, these restrictions can be managed individually.

Safety Notifications

OpenAI has imbued a safety system that can detect signs that might be harmful. In such a situation, the company has appointed some “specially trained people” to review the situation. These people will look into the signs of acute distress and contact their parents via email or text message pushed to their phone. This system is also subject to receive further improvement in the near future.

This feature is rolling out for all ChatGPT users starting today.
