Tesla Robotaxi area in Austin expanded once again
Tesla has expanded Austin’s geofenced area in the Robotaxi app, revealing a larger user service zone. Users have shared a before-and-after of the geofenced map, confirming this new revelation.
The EV maker launched its Model Y Robotaxis in June this year with an initial geofenced area of around 20 square miles. Since then, the company has expanded the geofenced area four times.
The initial launch area covered central Austin neighborhoods, and an expansion doubled the size of the map. The second and third extensions appeared in August, bringing the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and the Giga Texas factory into the range.
The latest expansion comes two months after the third move, surpassing Waymo’s current map coverage and expanding its reach to over 240 square miles.
These robotaxis are production vehicles with no additional hardware compared to Waymo’s LiDAR with sensors approach. Instead, Tesla is going solo with the vision system.
In the backend, Unsupervised Full Self Driving (FSD) navigates the vehicle for an autonomous driving experience. Despite being a Robotaxi, Tesla has employed a safety monitor to ensure passengers’ safety and emergency scenarios.
