Elon Musk has announced that the Grok 4.20 upgrade will arrive around Christmas. He called it a major improvement and said it might be ready, which has been delayed for months.

This comes right after Grok 4.1’s release with a silent rollout starting November 1. The model already dominated leaderboards like LMArena’s Text Arena, beating models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in conversational quality, emotional intelligence, and creative tasks before Gemini 3 Pro took over. It cuts hallucinations by about two-thirds compared to earlier versions and responds more quickly.

Earlier today, xAI also launched Grok 4.1 Fast. This variant focuses on agentic tool use, scoring 93% accuracy on the τ²-Bench for telecom agents. It outperforms Gemini 3 Pro by 6%, GPT-5 Codex by 6%, and Claude 4.5 Sonnet by 15%.

Grok 4.1 Fast jumps 18% over the base Grok 4 in tool-calling workflows. It handles real-time tasks such as web search, code execution, and document analysis with a 2-million-token context window.

Previous Grok versions, such as Grok 4 from July 2025 and Grok 4 Fast, set the base. However, Grok 4.1 and 4.1 Fast build directly on them with better reliability and speed.

The release date matters because AI competition moves fast. OpenAI just released GPT-5.1, Google launched Gemini 3, and others push updates monthly. In the meantime, xAI is shipping major gains every few weeks, closing gaps quickly.

Announcing Grok 4.20 for late December 2025 keeps pressure on rivals during the holiday period, when users test new features most. It shows xAI can iterate faster and efficiently.
