xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, has announced a significant expansion project in Southaven, Mississippi, with an investment exceeding $20 billion.

This development marks the largest private-sector economic initiative in Mississippi’s history and aims to enhance the company’s Colossus supercomputer cluster, which is already operational in nearby Memphis, Tennessee. The Southaven site, spanning approximately 800,000 square feet along Stateline Road, repurposes an existing warehouse to accelerate construction timelines.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves attended the $20 billion xAI investment

Governor Tate Reeves highlighted the project’s scale during the announcement, noting that it will power the world’s largest supercomputer and position Mississippi as a hub for emerging industries. Accompanying images from the event show Reeves and xAI representatives at a podium, with signage emphasizing the investment’s impact on the state.

The facility integrates with xAI’s existing Memphis infrastructure, targeting a combined coherent compute density of about two gigawatts by full operation, described as the highest in the world.

The xAI Memphis handle provided insights into the company’s regional growth. In a year-in-review X post, it detailed expansions from one to five sites in the midsouth, with over 450,000 GPUs active and plans to double that by Q2 2026.

It also confirmed construction progress, fiber installations, and cooling systems, illustrating the rapid deployment of infrastructure capable of delivering hundreds of megawatts.

Additionally, xAI emphasized community engagement, spending $10 million in 2025 on local Memphis restaurants and vendors to provide meals for employees and contractors. Images shared show food deliveries, catering setups, and workers at sites, underscoring support for the local economy.

This third major facility, internally codenamed “MACROHARDRR,” complements the original Colossus in Memphis and a second site, forming a clustered network for AI training. The investment includes data centers and power infrastructure to deploy over one million GPUs. xAI’s approach involves on-site power solutions, such as batteries and gas turbines, to address energy demands independently of traditional grids.

The project has drawn attention for its speed and scale, with xAI employing over 3,000 regional tradespeople for 24/7 construction. While some local discussions on X noted environmental considerations, such as air quality and wastewater management, xAI has invested in recycling plants and sustainable practices. Overall, the initiative positions the Memphis-Southaven area as a key center for AI compute, with xAI targeting advancements in the Grok AI model and other services.
