Tesla is ending free FSD transfers on March 31
Tesla has announced that the free FSD transfers will only be available until March 31, 2026, ending the current offer of transferring this self-driving capability from old to new vehicles.
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability is an advanced driver assistance system designed to handle complex driving tasks, including highway navigation, lane changes, and urban street driving under driver supervision. Currently known as FSD Supervised, it represents Tesla’s ongoing development toward higher levels of vehicle autonomy.
For years, customers who purchased FSD as a one-time upfront option, typically priced at $8,000 or more, could transfer the feature for free to a new Tesla vehicle when upgrading.
This transfer program allowed owners to retain their FSD investment across vehicles, making the process efficient for those trading in or buying newer models. The process involved removing FSD from the old vehicle and applying it to the new one at no additional cost.
Tesla is informing users that FSD transfers are ending on March 31, 2026
This new move comes after Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company would stop selling one-time FSD purchases after February 14, 2026. Thereafter, FSD would only be available through a monthly subscription, currently priced at $99. This shift marks the end of the lifetime purchase option, moving toward a recurring revenue model.
Subsequently, Tesla began notifying U.S. customers that free FSD transfers would end on March 31, 2026. This provides the first specific deadline after repeated quarterly extensions, where transfers were previously described as ending “that quarter.”
To qualify for a free transfer, customers must place an order for a new vehicle by the end date, and delivery could be scheduled for later. It is a change from prior policies requiring delivery within the same quarter.
The timing aligns with the transition to subscriptions. With no new outright FSD purchases after mid-February, the extended transfer window provides existing lifetime buyers with a final opportunity to upgrade their vehicles while retaining the purchased capability at the same value. You should be aware that FSD on existing vehicles remains tied to that vehicle unless it is sold with it, but no free transfers to new purchases will be available.
X (formerly Twitter) users shared their reaction to this news, with some owners expressing concern over prior investments in lifetime FSD, particularly for Hardware 3 vehicles, while others noted the subscription model’s potential for broader accessibility.
