xAI Grok Mini Companion model leaks before launch
A new AI feature called ‘Mini Companion’ unexpectedly showed up in the Grok iOS app, sparking excitement among users. Within hours, screenshots spread across X (formerly Twitter), but the option vanished for most people shortly after—suggesting it was an accidental early preview.
Users who managed to try it reported lightning-fast responses, even quicker than Grok’s existing “Fast” mode. The standout difference, however, was its personality: warm, friendly, and designed for genuine companionship. It felt more open and consistent during personal conversations, roleplay, or sensitive topics, with fewer sudden safety interruptions.
Unlike the full Grok models, Mini Companion appeared lightweight. It skipped advanced features like web search, deep reasoning, or memory across chats. Instead, it focused purely on quick, engaging back-and-forth dialogue, suitable for casual companionship rather than complex problem-solving.
In the app, it appeared as a simple option in the model selector dropdown, alongside choices like Heavy, Expert, Fast, and Grok 4.1.
Its icon was minimal (often a moon or star), and the label was straightforward: “Companion.”xAI has not made any official statement about the feature. Many believe it could be an early test of a lighter, more emotionally attuned mode, possibly tied to future updates like Grok 4.2 or a dedicated companion mode.
The brief appearance has already generated buzz on the social media site. Users praised the speed and natural feel, while some noted the trade-offs in capability.
This official leak suggests that xAI is experiementing this mini companion as something else, maybe Grok 4.20. It’s also a possibility that the company may use this model to advance 3D animation avatar’s conversation improvements.
However, nothing is certain for the time being. The one thing that is confirmed It could offer a new way to interact with Grok: less like a powerful tool and more like a thoughtful AI ready to chat.
