Tesla CEO says FSD subscription price will increase, but not now

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has stated that the monthly price for the company’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised subscription will increase over time. Musk shared this update while responding to news about changes in driver assistance options.

Tesla offers FSD Supervised as a subscription for $99 per month. This version requires the driver to stay alert and keep their hands on the wheel. The chief of the company explained that the price will go up as the system’s abilities get better.

The biggest change in value, according to Musk, will come when FSD reaches unsupervised mode. In this future stage, passengers could use their phones or even sleep during the entire trip without needing to watch the road. He called this the “massive value jump” and emphasized that unsupervised driving would make the feature far more useful and convenient.

Musk’s statement came after reports that Tesla has stopped offering basic Autopilot in the US and Canada. New vehicles now start with Traffic-Aware Cruise Control as the standard feature. Buyers can add FSD through the $99 monthly subscription or a one-time payment of $8,000, with the lower outright purchase price available until February 14, 2026. All new Tesla cars also include a 30-day free trial of FSD Supervised.

This pricing approach ties the cost directly to the technology’s progress. As FSD becomes safer and more advanced through ongoing software updates and data from Tesla’s fleet, the subscription fee will reflect those improvements. However, the current fee will not be changing anytime soon.

On the other hand, Musk’s comments focus on the long-term goal of achieving full autonomy, where the car handles driving completely on its own. This applies to both outright purchase and a monthly subscription.
