Tesla opens free Supercharging in Mississippi and Tennessee
Tesla has announced free Supercharging for all of the EV users in Mississippi and Tennessee affected by the severe storm. A winter storm in late January 2026 brought heavy ice, snow, and high winds to the southern United States, causing extensive damage to power infrastructure. Tennessee was among the hardest hit, with peak outages affecting over 337,000 customers.
Mississippi also experienced significant disruptions across multiple counties. As of early February 2026, approximately 38,000 customers in Mississippi and 22,000 in Tennessee remain without power, concentrated in northern Mississippi (including Tippah, Tallahatchie, and Northeast Mississippi areas) and the Nashville region served by Nashville Electric Service.

The outages have disrupted essential services, including heating during frigid temperatures and home charging for electric vehicles. Restoration efforts by utilities such as Entergy Mississippi and local cooperatives continue, complicated by ongoing weather challenges. Reports indicate that full power recovery in the most affected areas could extend into mid-February or longer.
On February 3, 2026, Tesla activated free Supercharging at eight stations across Mississippi and Tennessee to support EV drivers impacted by the outages, allowing access to reliable charging independent of the grid.
In related relief efforts, xAI donated hundreds of generators to affected communities, including 500 units to northern Mississippi counties like Tippah and additional support for Nashville. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee publicly thanked Elon Musk and xAI for the contributions. In response to the governor’s post, Musk stated that arrangements are underway to provide Tesla Powerwalls, offering potential longer-term backup power solutions.
