A public filing has revealed a product codenamed Sweetpea, with a planned consumer name “Dime,” referencing the US 10-cent coin belonging to OpenAI. The device appears positioned as an advanced earbud or headphone focused on AI features.

According to the post, OpenAI adjusted plans due to supply challenges. High costs from memory shortages for advanced chips delayed a full version with on-device computing. Instead, a simpler audio-only model is expected first in 2026. A more capable version would follow later when component prices drop.

This aligns with ongoing interest in OpenAI exploring personal AI devices. Discussions on X often link such rumors to minimalist, user-friendly designs. The idea of a pocket or wearable AI assistant has gained attention, with some users noting potential for voice-based interaction without screens.

OpenAI has an official partnership with designer Jony Ive and his firm LoveFrom. In 2025, OpenAI announced the closure of a deal with io Products, Inc., bringing its team onboard. LoveFrom remains independent but holds deep design responsibilities across OpenAI projects. This collaboration focuses on creative input for future products.

OpenAI also develops its own chips to support the growing demands for AI. Leadership has shared views on advanced AI running on personal devices soon. However, no official details confirm a specific consumer headphone or the “Dime” name. Current announcements center on software models, chip design, and broader partnerships.
