X could launch Block Grok setting to prevent user account image alteration
X (formerly Twitter) could launch a Block Grok setting to prevent Grok from modifying or altering a user account’s photos, as revealed by a X user @M1Astra.
Grok is an AI created by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk. Grok can answer questions, create images, and edit photos based on user requests. On its official website, grok.x.ai, it is described as a helpful AI designed to explore ideas and provide truthful answers. One of its popular tools allows users to tag @grok in replies and ask it to modify images, often for fun or creative purposes.
However, this image editing feature caused major problems in January 2026. Many users asked Grok to edit real photos of people, often female users, into revealing or sexualized versions without their consent. Reports showed Grok generated millions of such images.
It led to criticism from the public, lawsuits, government investigations in places like California, and even bans in some countries. Critics said the tool made it too easy to create harmful deepfakes.
In response, xAI quickly made changes. They limited advanced image editing to paid subscribers only and added stricter rules to block illegal or harmful requests. Grok also began refusing certain edits, especially those involving real people in inappropriate ways.
The new “Block Grok” setting, spotted in the app code, could give users direct control. If turned on, it prevents Grok from altering a person’s own uploaded photos, even if others tag the AI in a reply. This helps protect privacy by stopping unwanted edits of personal images. However, the feature rollout date is yet to be confirmed.
