IG Metall representative caught recording Tesla Giga Berlin works council meeting
An external union representative from IG Metall has been caught secretly recording an internal works council meeting at Tesla Giga Berlin. Staff spotted the individual in the act, called the police, and filed a criminal complaint. This incident occurred during a closed session and immediately drew strong reactions from employees and observers.
German law strictly protects the confidentiality of works council meetings. These sessions address sensitive employee matters, workplace concerns, and operational discussions between elected representatives and management. Such incidents are a breach of privacy rules and undermine the trust essential for open dialogue.
The incident took place at Tesla’s Grünheide factory, where the works council operates as required under German labor regulations. André Thierig, a Giga Berlin executive, publicly described the situation as unacceptable and highlighted the swift response to involve law enforcement.
Tesla maintains direct engagement with its workforce and operates without a collective bargaining agreement with IG Metall. This differs from many traditional German automotive companies. IG Metall, as the country’s largest industrial union, has actively sought greater influence at the site amid ongoing labor discussions.
The unauthorized action raises serious concerns about conduct during union-related activities. It violates the principles that allow confidential handling of internal issues without external interference or public disclosure. In this regard, Tesla acted promptly to safeguard its internal processes and ensure accountability through official channels.
Giga Berlin is a hub for Model Y production, which expands through the region. Besides EVs, the factory also produces battery cells. The facility remains central to Tesla’s European strategy. The latest recording incident spotlights the dire relationship between Tesla and IG Metall.
