Rivian R2 is launching this Spring, here’s what you should know
Rivian has officially announced that the Rivian R2 electric SUV is launching in the spring and also revealed some important details about the initial models that the company will rollout for customers.
Production is slated to begin soon, with the first deliveries expected in the first half of 2026. The initial variant will feature dual motors and all-wheel drive, with full details on pricing, options, and more to be revealed on March 12.
Designed for both everyday use and off-road exploration, the R2 is a five-seat SUV optimized for utility and performance. It includes rear accessory ports for easy attachment of items like bike mounts, requiring no tools.
The vehicle emphasizes simplicity in design, making it easier to build and service. Rivian has highlighted its robust engineering for long-term reliability, with features like a streamlined zonal architecture that controls everything from throttle to infotainment and autonomy systems.
In terms of specifications, the R2 will come with two battery sizes. The larger pack is projected to deliver over 300 miles of range on a single charge. Performance is impressive, with acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds in top configurations. The in-house developed Maximus motor is smaller, more cost-efficient, and simpler to manufacture compared to previous models. Charging compatibility includes a NACS port, allowing access to a wider network of stations.

Rivian has conducted extensive testing on the R2, including extreme durability runs in scorching heat, bitter cold, sand, and water. Development fleets have accumulated tens of thousands of miles across diverse terrains, from Death Valley to Fairbanks. Manufacturing validation builds are already rolling off the line at Rivian’s expanded facility in Normal, Illinois, which now spans over 5.4 million square feet with a planned capacity of 215,000 units annually.
Starting around $45,000, the R2 aims to make electric adventure vehicles more accessible. Reservations are open with a $100 deposit in the US. As production ramps up, Rivian will continue ntinues to refine the vehicle through real-world feedback. This spring launch marks a key milestone for Rivian R2, expanding its lineup beyond the flagship R1 series.
