SpaceX brings Starlink satellite internet to high-speed trains

Italy’s high-speed train operator, Italo Treno, has teamed up with Starlink to introduce satellite-based internet across its fleet, marking a significant upgrade in passenger experience.

The service, set to launch in May, will provide free Wi-Fi included in ticket prices, allowing travelers to stream videos, play games, and handle work tasks without disruptions, even on trains speeding up to 300 kilometers per hour.

Following almost a year of rigorous testing, the rollout will cover all 51 trains by 2027, delivering speeds 60 percent faster and latency 50 percent lower than previous options. Importantly, the connection remains stable in tunnels, addressing a common pain point for rail commuters.

This innovative approach uses low-Earth orbit satellites to ensure reliable coverage, enhancing comfort for passengers in all classes, from standard to executive. Security features, including multi-factor authentication, will integrate with a new app supporting mobile payment systems.

This development builds on Starlink’s growing footprint in the transportation sector, where it has been expanding mobile connectivity solutions globally. For instance, partnerships with rail companies like Brightline in Florida and ScotRail in Scotland have brought high-speed, low-latency internet to trains, enabling real-time diagnostics, safety monitoring, and improved onboard services.

In aviation, collaborations with airlines such as Southwest and private jet operators like OPUL Jets have equipped fleets with satellite Wi-Fi, allowing uninterrupted access during flights. Similar initiatives extend to maritime transport, with Starlink providing coverage for boats and ships.

These efforts stem from Starlink’s mission to deliver affordable, fast internet worldwide, engineered through its parent company’s space expertise. By integrating with various modes of travel, including autos, planes, and now high-speed rails, Starlink is reshaping how people stay connected on the move.
