SpaceX is using Spok, a tailored version of Grok AI: Report

SpaceX has developed a custom version of xAI’s Grok chatbot named “Spok,” which evokes Star Trek’s logical Vulcan, Mr. Spock, and matches the founder, Elon Musk’s, sense of humor.

SpaceX, one of xAI’s earliest enterprise customers, has been scaling up internal use of this tailored AI, trained specifically on the company’s data of space engineering, mission, and rocket data.

This quirky revelation underscores the deep integration following the blockbuster merger between SpaceX and xAI, announced earlier in February 2026. The deal, signed on January 31 and closed just two days later, created a combined entity valued at an astonishing $1.25 trillion, SpaceX at $1 trillion, and xAI at $250 billion. It stands as the largest corporate merger in U.S. history, blending SpaceX’s rocket and satellite dominance with cutting-edge AI capabilities.

At the heart of the merger is Musk’s visionary bet on orbital data centers. “The lowest-cost place to put AI will be space,” Musk has stated, predicting this shift within two to three years. SpaceX plans to launch AI-equipped satellites using its Starship rocket, creating solar-powered computing hubs in orbit, similar to how Starlink revolutionized internet access.

This convergence addresses AI’s massive energy demands on Earth while leveraging unlimited solar power and cooling in space. The merger serves both companies’ interests strategically. For xAI, facing intense competition from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, the deal provides immense financial muscle and resources.

The company’s investors gain about a 20% stake in the combined giant, bolstering capital for growth ahead of a potential IPO. Meanwhile, SpaceX benefits from seamless AI integration, enhancing operations, like Spok’s role in processing complex orbital math and engineering queries, and opening new revenue streams through space-based AI services. Projections show SpaceX alone expecting $8 billion in adjusted earnings on $16 billion in revenue in 2025.

This tie-up follows Musk’s pattern of consolidating his empire, such as prior X-xAI mergers. It also accelerates his goal of making Grok the world’s leading AI.
