In a quick conversation with Guido van Rossum, the founder of the Python programming language, Elon Musk revealed where SpaceX utilizes the most popular language in the world.

Musk said C and C++ for the core software that powers its rockets and Starlink satellites during flights. These languages handle the high-stakes tasks where every millisecond counts for smooth and secure operations.

On the other hand, Python comes into areas where for faster iterations and while simplifying use cases. It helps the teams to iterate quickly without sacrificing reliability in critical spots.

This approach makes sense for a company innovating for space travel. C and C++ offer tight control over memory and performance, a critical requirement when you’re dealing with hardware that can’t afford run-time issues in orbit or during launch.

Python steps in for tools on the ground, like data analysis or simulations, where developers can change code to test new ideas. For instance, while some might wonder about newer options like Rust, the focus stays on proven tools that have been time-tested under pressure.

Recently, SpaceX has started hiring new engineers in Austin and Seattle to work on satellites with built-in AI features and even data centers in space. A new facility in Florida now tests components against radiation, improving builds for all their vehicles. On the launch side, another batch of Starlink satellites went up from California, marking routine reuse of rockets that land back after multiple trips.

The satellite constellation now has 10,000 satellites, delivering better internet to remote spots worldwide. Looking ahead, Starship will help to launch the next wave of V3 satellites this year, increasing payload capacity by over 20 times per launch and adding direct connections to regular phones without extra gear.

Author’s take

C, C++, and Python are the most used programming languages. Top industry players utilize these languages for their reliable and fast operational capabilities. Among these, Python has become the go-to destination for artificial intelligence technologies development.

Musk’s revelation on the use of Python, C and C++ shows the diversified use, which prioritze company’s requirements.
