SpaceX CEO says Starship will launch every hour in near future

Elon Musk, Founder and CEO of SpaceX, said that the Starship rocket will launch every hour in the near future, pointing to the rapid scale of improvement and the launches it will deliver with missions.

This confidence is based on a foundation started in the early 2020s, when Starship made a debut as the world’s most powerful rocket, designed for full reusability to cut space travel costs.

Early tests in 2023 focused on integrated flights, identifying issues like engine fires and control losses during ascent and separation. In the following year, flights achieved real-time data through Starlink and improved safety systems.

The past year was quite stressful. In January, SpaceX launched Flight 7 and performed a successful booster catch, followed by propellant leaks on the upper stage. March’s Flight 8 patched the loose ends, but the engine failure caused the failure. Flight 9 also passed through the ascent phase, yet the leaks failed the reentry.

Test Anomaly

In June, SpaceX performed a static fire test on Ship 36, which resulted in a major blast on Massey’s site, halting the test activities at the site. Teams carried out an investigation to find the root cause of the explosion and implemented new measures.

V3 vehicles

The next phase in the Starship program is to test and run V3 vehicles. SpaceX completed cryoproof tests on the V3 Super Heavy booster recently. This mega rocket features new propellant systems.

The V3 version targets repeated flights soon, with a launch expected in early March. V4 upgrades include more vacuum engines, totaling 42 per stack, and tankers delivering over 200 tons of propellant. The rocket maker will deploy employees at Gigabay to prepare for high-rate production.

Musk’s prediction comes at a time when Starship has a critical role to support Moon missions through NASA’s Artemis, serving as the lander for human returns starting with Artemis III.

It will provide cargo deliveries and help to establish permanent bases on the lunar surface. For Mars, the rocket aims to work as a self-sustaining city, with propellant transfer tests set for 2026. Recent xAI acquisition integrates AI for space operations, boosting data centers in orbit.

Author’s take

Starship brings massive capabilities for future space missions. Its scale and the payload capacity will provide a substantial edge on competitors and enable humanity to expand beyond Earth. However, the current pace of development is running behind schedule, and SpaceX needs to make massive progress in 2026 to meet its future targets.
