SpaceX rolling out Ship 39 for pressure and cryogenic proof tests before Starship Flight 12

Today, SpaceX teams began the rollout process for Ship 39 out of MegaBay 2 at Starbase to Massey’s test site for its opening round of pressure and cryogenic proof tests. This step launches a full evaluation for the first vehicle in the V3 block series.

Ship 39 comes with new heat shield tiles across its surface for better protection from reentry heat. The ship shows fresh flap designs and body lines that create a cleaner overall look.

Teams have placed refueling ports on top to test cryogenic propellant transfer in orbit. This setup proves key for longer missions, since it lets vehicles top up fuel in space for trips to the Moon or Mars. The V3 block also brings taller sections and extra propellant capacity, which boost payload potential and performance.

Once reached, the ship will stand steady at the Massey’s test site, and crews will start tests with pressure checks. This ship will get filled with the tanks with gas under high pressure to confirm a solid structure and zero leaks. Cryogenic proof tests come right after, where super-cold liquids flow in to copy real fuel conditions. These tests will verify how the new tanks and lines hold up against extreme cold and pressure.

Technicians could perform two or three cryo cycles before they move to static fire tests. The sequence begins with one Raptor engine firing, then steps up to six engines at once. However, the current vehicle doesn’t have any Raptor assembly.

Recently, Super Heavy boosters V3 class have performed well in such tests. Teams have already finished cryoproof operations on the first upgraded booster in a multi-day campaign. The work puts redesigned propellant systems and overall strength through cold-condition trials. With Raptor 3 engines now standard, the boosters will gain powerful thrust and better efficiency for reliable catches and quick reuse.

SpaceX Founder and CEO, Elon Musk, said that the Starship Flight 12 could launch as soon as March. However, the company will need to wrap the tests with satisfying results before making this new flight.
