GM ending its Ultra Cruise autonomous system

General Motors (GM) is ending its Ultra Cruise autonomous driving driver assistance system, based on a new report that emerged on this matter.

CNBC reported that GM is ending the Ultra Cruise Program citing two sources familiar with the system. It is also mentioned that the automaker is now focused on the Super Cruise system and expanding features rather than having two different systems.

According to official details, the Ultra Cruise system aimed to provide hands-free driving in 95 percent of all driving scenarios. It equips a 360-degree view, a host of cameras, short and long-range radars, LiDAR, and a computing system.

It also supports a driver attention system to monitor the driver’s head position and eyes to check eye activity on the road. Last year, GM said Ultra Cruise “will be able to travel truly hands-free” across public roads in the U.S. and Canada.

A GM official said that the automaker continues to expand access to and increase the capability of Super Cruise.
