Kia recalling Niro and EV6 EVs for faulty driveshaft in the U.S.

Hyundai’s sister electric vehicle (EV) subsidiary Kia is now recalling Kia Niro EV and Kia EV6 models in the U.S. for potential faulty driveshaft.

A letter published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that drive shafts may have been “improperly heat-treated”. This could cause the driveshaft to break under load and reduce drive power. Eventually, this may lead to a crash and endanger the driver’s life.

The recall includes Kia EV 6 2023 and Kia Niro EV models ranging from 2023 to 2024. The total potential number of units affected by the driveshaft fault is around 1,243 as revealed by NHTSA.

As a remedy, Kia dealers will replace the faulty driveshaft free of charge. To do so, the company will circulate recall notifications via mail by March 29, 2024 onwards.
