Renault’s $27,000 EV registers 50,000 people in waitlist

The newly unveiled Renault 5 electric vehicle (EV) with a 25,000 euro ($27,000) starting price is getting an amusing response from customers as it has registered 50,000 interested people for the waitlist.

In a recent interview with Automotive News Europe, Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive said the new Renault 5 will come in two battery sizes 40kWh and 52 kWh that could deliver 300 and 400 kilometers of driving range respectively.

The company would start selling the large battery version first followed by the smaller battery model.

Renault’s chief mentioned that the company has 50,000 people on the waitlist. The automaker will open orders for Renault 5 E-Tech in May this year and the delivery is expected around September or October.

He also takes this launch as a challenge for people who are showing high interest and expecting fast delivery. Renault planned to put this vehicle in fleet operations and it is expected to make 40 percent of its sales.

The new Renault 5 E-Tech electric is the first vehicle to come with an AmpR Small platform dedicated to B-Segment EVs. It has 2.54 meters of wheelbase, 326 liters of boot capacity, and a reduced weight of less than 1,500 kilograms.

This compact EV has a new AC bidirectional charger compatible with V2L (vehicle to load) and V2G (vehicle to grid) technologies.
