Samsung 46 mm cylindrical batteries

Samsung SDI CEO, Choi Yoon-ho said that the company is preparing to mass-produce 46 mm batteries as early as next year.

The latest comment from Choi came this past week at an opening ceremony of InterBattery 2024, the largest battery exhibition in Seoul South Korea.

He mentioned that the next generation 46 mm cylindrical battery brings five times the cell capacity and six times more output compared to existing 21700 (21 mm diameter, 70 mm height) batteries.

It is revealed that Samsung SDI has completed preparations for the mass production of 46 mm batteries and all of the processes will be reviewed and finalized by the end of 2024.

For now, the company has not shared investment guidance for this production but it is likely to cost more than last year.

Solid State Battery:

Samsung SDI is partnering with both Stellantis NV and General Motors (GM) to build batteries in the U.S. It has revealed a roadmap for commercialization of solid-state batteries that could start production in 2027. However, release samples will be shared before the production year.

“There should be a jump in battery technology for the expansion of EVs as the technologies for lithium-ion batteries, especially for materials, are almost saturated,” said Stella Go, executive vice president at Samsung SDI. “We are trying to lead in new technologies.”

The South Korean battery maker is also looking to achieve at least 9 minutes of battery charge by 2026 and at least 20 years of battery lifespan by 2029.
