Volkswagen is planning for an entry-level electric car “ID.1” by 2027 and the company will discuss this matter in the coming weeks.

Volkswagen Brand Chief Thomas Schaefer said that four project teams are working on the proposal for a vehicle named “ID.1”. Schaefer also showcased a design prototype of the vehicle to a group of people behind closed doors.

Information from the meeting reveals that this entry-level Volkswagen ID.1 could be ready by 2027.

Volkswagen has a big lineup of launches coming for the next three years. That includes the ID.2 EV in 2026 at a price of around 25,000 euros ($27,335). It is jointly developed by Volkswagon and China’s Xpeng group with shared technologies and an EV platform.

The ID.1 could bring a promising price to disrupt the EV market. VW Group Chief Executive Oliver Blume said on Wednesday that the entry-level model could be priced at around 20,000 euros ($21.858). The company will organize several rounds of discussion to decide the car’s development by this year.

To do so, VW hints that the car will be made with industry partners and diverse solutions. Nothing is official for the time being.

Low-price EVs are the next target of the automakers as the demand for high-priced models continues to decline. Companies including GM and Ford are rescaling their plans for existing models and working on more affordable EV options for future releases.

In the meantime, there is no liable entry-level model available for the EV customers.
