Hyundai Motor has announced that its IONIQ 5 Robotaxi has completed the U.S. driver’s license test. This takes the robotaxi one step closer to its public availability.

The IONIQ 5 robotaxi comes with autonomous technology and achieved a series of public-level driving tests. That includes road driving in Las Vegas to showcase its capability. Clearing a public driving test is a huge win for IONIQ 5 robotaxi.

The IONIQ 5 robotaxi performed speed control, lane changes, and maneuvering at turns. The car also showed a stop at a stop sign and reaction to real-time hazards.

The autonomous driving technology for this robotaxi is developed by Motional, a joint venture of Hyundai Motor and auto supplier Aptiv.

In terms of intelligence, the robotaxi has cleared driving performance in different scenarios packed with sensors including LiDAR, radar, and cameras.

Hyundai Motor announced last year that IONIQ 5 robotaxi is the first SEA Level 4 autonomous vehicle (AV) to be certified under the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

Its new solution developed by Motional conducted over 130,000 autonomous rides through its public service in Las Vegas, says the company.
