Tiktoker Stuck in Tesla

A TikToker claimed she was stuck in a Tesla while installing a software update. This video has been shared on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, and received many replies from Tesla community members.

The TikToker @brianna__janel posted a video about a Tesla two days ago. She said her car had been “updating for the past 30 minutes”. She also mentioned, “When your car is updating, you are stuck in your car”. She further added that the Tesla was unable to open the door either.

Afterward, user @jeremyjudkins_ shared this video on X and said this is false information. The user shared a video of his own to demonstrate how the vehicle works during the update procedure to refute the claim made by TikToker.

Official instructions

The software upgrade process in a Tesla happens in two steps:

  1. Download
  2. Install

You can download the software update but it requires an active Wi-Fi connection. You can drive your vehicle while downloading but the download will be interrupted based on the connection stability.

The second step is more cautious because you cannot drive the vehicle and it must be in Park while the software is being updated. The software update may take around 30 seconds but in some cases, it could take even more.

Therefore, it is recommended to install a software update when you have plenty of time to spare in or outside of the car. You can update your car overnight or at work.

To be mentioned, you cannot charge your car during an upgrade. The charging will stop instantly as the installation begins and will resume only after installation is completed.

Door Locked?

All Tesla comes with two manual options to open the door in case of any emergency. First is the button located at the top of the interior door handle.

The second is a manual door release. This option is designed for scenarios when the car has no power. To use, pull the manual door release located in front of the window switches. Remember to use it only when there’s no power to open the door with a button.
