Apple is exploring new ways to enter the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and is reportedly working on new AI chips for data centers as revealed in a new report.

WSJ reports that the iPhone maker is building “AI Chips” for data centers that could run new AI-based features that will be announced during the annual Apple developer conference in June.

The report speculates that the company could have an edge in the AI race with the development of data center-centric products. This project is internally known as ACDC – Apple Chips for Data Center.

However, it’s unknown whether the company would sell them commercially to other customers or remain exclusive for in-house machines. Despite the result, Apple’s silicon could be more impactful in the process of building an AI data center chip.

The report follows as Apple is looking to deeply integrate AI features into new consumer devices including the iPhones and iPads.

The company is reportedly preparing a dedicated AI chip to empower the new AI software features that will be unveiled at WWDC24. Generative AI is of the key scope Apple is exploring at the moment. Its competitors such as Samsung have already introduced this tech earlier this year with S24 devices.

However, Apple could go further with iOS 18 and its surprising new capabilities. Apple is also in talks with other AI companies including Google and OpenAI to integrate their AI technologies in iOS.
