Apple and OpenAI announced partnership for GPT-4o LLM

On June 10, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to integrate the GPT-4o large language model (LLM) at the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024.

Under this partnership, Apple will use OpenAI’s GPT computing to empower various features in the latest operating systems including iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

The new integration majorly impacts Siri voice assistant. It now has a natural language processing and expansion in voice commands to complete more tasks. The iPhone maker said Siri will get more AI features in the next few years.

The integration of GPT-4o will allow device owners to access generative AI in these three operating systems. These softwares can now generate texts, images, and suggestions in most of the system and third-party apps.

These features are part of “Apple Intelligence” Apple’s official entry into LLM and generative AI. The company uses both on-device and cloud-processed AI features for its software ecosystem. The fusion allows to intelligently switch between on-device and cloud AI based on the task.

Despite this partnership, the Cupertino-based company prioritized on-device AI to “secure” user data and keep cloud AI’s access for OpenAI capabilities. The AI firm has garnered massive popularity since the launch of ChatGPT, its large language model (LLM). The platform has over 100 million users and offers paid features for a better user experience.

Last month, OpenAI launched GPT-4o, its new flagship model with improved natural human-to-machine interactions. The version has revamped voice interactions with training data. The model uses a single new model with end-to-end training including text, vision, and audio. It means that the input and outputs are addressed by the same neural network.

Other than OpenAI, Apple was also in discussion with Google to use its Gemini LLM but the deal apparently has not been closed. However, it’s possible that both companies might find common ground in the near future.
