Apple is testing SpaceX Starlink direct to cell satellite internet in iPhones

Apple is working with SpaceX to launch its Starlink satellite communication in iPhones with a future software update rollout reports Bloomberg. The report mentions that the talks are being held behind the doors and includes T-Mobile US.
It’s also mentioned that the test began after Apple released a recent iOS 18.3 software update with satellite internet technology. No further details have been shared on when iPhones will get this technology.
To the best of our knowledge, the service mentioned in the report should be Direct to Cell. SpaceX’s proprietary technology is designed to provide seamless data and connectivity services to a device. Users can not only use the internet but also send messages and calls similar to a network connection.
Unlike the Starlink terminal, Direct to Cell offers uninterrupted connectivity without any device modifications or plugins. To rollout DtC in the US, SpaceX has partnered with T-Mobile.
A direct to cell satellite service can eliminate dead zones by providing coverage for the 500,000 square miles of land in the US, which is not covered by earth-bound cell towers. Unlike Earth, direct-to-cell satellites create a cell tower in space, which remains unhindered in any weather conditions.
SpaceX began sending Direct to Cell satellites into orbit in early 2024 and it now has sufficient numbers to run services for consumers. It has also demonstrated the technology a few times in the past year showing video calling and text messaging via iPhone and Android devices.

Direct to cell was also allowed by the FCC to provide critical communication for those without internet access to reach first responders and loved ones during Hurricane Helene and Milton.
In December, T-Mobile started direct to cell beta program for T-Mobile postpaid voice customers. You can check the T-Mobile site to know the registration phase. The company has planned a wide release in Early 2025 with text messaging and voice and data services later.
