On April 4, 2025, OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman has shared an update on the upcoming model and also mentioned that GPT-5 will come soon without revealing a timeline.

“There are a bunch of reasons for this, but the most exciting one is that we are going to be able to make GPT-5 much better than we originally. we also found it harder than we thought it was going to be to smoothly integrate everything. and we want to make sure we have enough capacity to support what we expect to be unprecedented demand.” Sam wrote on X.

OpenAI released 01 model in late 2024, followed by an advanced model 01 Pro. In May 2024, OpenAI launched GPT-4o, a multimodal AI model that could handle text, images, and more, which later introduced for free and paid ChatGPT users.

The 03-mini, a smaller version of the 03 reasoning model, was finalized in January 2025 and rolled out shortly after. Since, GPT-5 is delayed, OpenAI now wants to bridge the gap with 03 and 04-mini.

However, the delay wasn’t completely unexpected because this is not the first time we heard of ChatGPT. A report from late 2024 suggests that OpenAI Orion was undergoing an extended post-training process incorporating human feedback to improve its response.

OpenAI’s prioritization for 03 and 04-mini proposes a strategic move to maintain momentum while ensuring GPT-5 meets the expectations and beat the competition.

Speaking of competition, DeepSeek’s open-source R1 model from early 2025, has been a strong contender, scoring 96.3%on Codeforces benchmark, just shy of OpenAI’s 01 at 96.6%. Google’s Gemini and Claude are also going head to head with OpenAI with their latest models.
