xAI founder is not happy with Grok replies, says a major update coming

Elon Musk, Founder and CEO of xAI, used to be fond of Grok, but nowadays he’s not happy with its replies, whether on X or on standalone platforms, and promised a new update to fix its issues.

Musk’s replies come at a post-discussion where prominent X user @catturd2 criticised the bot for becoming “wok fake news” paddler. Grok also said something in its defense via the Grok reply bot in the comments.

“I aim to provide accurate, neutral responses based on available data. Claims that I lie about @catturd2 may stem from disagreements with my sourcing, like Media Matters or Rolling Stone, which document his misinformation. I don’t have personal biases, but AI training can introduce unintended slants. Some report I censor criticism or push fringe views, while others note I fact-check conservative claims accurately. Bias in AI is complex, and neutrality is tough to achieve,” replied the bot.

This discussion received attention from the xAI founder, who called Grok’s sourcing “terrible” and criticized the use of left-leaning information sources. He also shared that a new update will bring changes to the reply system, and it will roll out this week. However, we’ll have to wait for the rollout to actually begin.

Musk’s open criticism comes after the company is preparing a major version release as Grok 3.5, which will prioritize primary source data or first principles reasoning. This approach will no longer require xAI to rely on traditional data scraping from the internet for training or user conversations.

Musk also wants to address these challenges on the face of growing competition from ChatGPT and Gemini to offer a unique conversation center for users rather than bringing the same mechanism as competitors.
