OpenAI is preparing to launch the GPT-5 model in August, as revealed the recent reports. Additionally, the model reference is now found in Copilot, suggesting that Microsoft is also preparing for a first GPT-5 release. OpenAI to launch GPT-5 in August, reference surfaced in Microsoft’s Copilot.
TheVerge reported that the next frontier model could launch in early August, and the shipment will include mini and nano versions. The company will also launch these models through the API for users.
OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, also hyped the GPT-5 as a major upgrade, but its release has been pushed continuously over the past year. The AI firm released GPT-4 in March 2023 with a significant shift from GPT-3.5, specialized in natural language processing and better context awareness. However, the model lacks additional multi-modal capabilities.
Instead of launching a new frontier model next, the company has introduced new version upgrades, including GPT-4o, which can generate text, images, and provide voice interactions. GPT o1 and o3 also made a debut in 2024, focusing on powerful reasoning capabilities.
Earlier this year, GPT-4.5 made its debut as an upgrade over GPT-4, focusing on more natural conversation and far superior reasoning. It integrated the DALL-E model and supports file uploads and analysis. One of the major improvements in this model was reduced hallucination.

Information coming from testingcatalog reveals that Microsoft is preparing as one of the earliest providers for the GPT-5 model tagged with a new smart mode. You will see this in the selection menu alongside Quick Response, Think Deeper, and Deep Research.
The option says “Smart (GPT-5)” and is described as “Uses GPT-5 to think quickly or deeply”. It appears that the mode could automatically switch its response generation mode between regular and deep thinking according to the user prompt.
This GPT-5 reference in Copilot is currently hidden from public users and remains under development. However, it could launch with the GPT-5’s official unveiling.
