Anthropic announces rate limits for Claude Pro and Max users

Due to high demand, Anthropic has announced weekly rate limits for Claude Pro and Max subscribers. This limit will apply starting in August, and the company estimates that these rates will apply to less than 5% of subscribers based on current usage.

Claude code has also seen an “unprecedented demand”, which is part of Anthropic’s Max plan. Despite announcing rate limits, the company promises to improve the availability in the near future.

Anthropic revealed that some Claude code users are running it 24/7 in the background. These actions are creating a high load on Claude’s server. For example, one user is consuming tens of thousands of model usage on a $200 plan.

Some of the users are also sharing and reselling their accounts to share Claude’s AI capabilities, violating its terms of use. The new weekly rate limits will apply to Claude Pro and Max users starting August 28, 2025. Anthropic also has plans to introduce an option to buy additional usage at standard API rates.

“We’re still exploring the best ways to ensure as broad access as possible to Claude Code,” wrote Anthropic in a statement.
