Tesla Robotaxi public launch is set for September: CEO
Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the Robotaxi rides are opening to public users starting September, and this will be the first full-fledged launch of Tesla’s ride-hailing service.
Numerous car makers across the industry are interested in autonomous ride-hailing. Last year, Tesla laid out a plan to release Robotaxis in public with full autonomous driving technology.
A month ago, the company announced its first Robotaxi launch in Austin within a geofenced area. The company has received approval, but initial rides have been limited to invite-only. Therefore, the autonomous ride-hailing experience has been more like beta testing.
That said, the company has worked its way through a more expansive approach and increased the size of the geofenced area. The limited invites have attracted people to test the vehicle, and one of them asked on X about public access.
On that, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has announced that the Robotaxi will be available for all starting next month. That means any users in the geofenced area will be able to experience Tesla’s robotaxi without invites.
Currently, the company provides an exclusive mobile app for invited Robotaxi users to view the geofenced area and order a ride. Users can track their robotaxi ETA with features such as live notifications. Similarly, the app allows users to make a payment.
The EV maker has employed its best-selling car, Model Y, to conduct the ride-hailing service. Unlike Alphabet’s Waymo robotaxis, Tesla is sticking with the vision-only model, and there aren’t any additional accessories or hardware changes made to the vehicle.
This Model Y Robotaxi is using an unsupervised version of Full Self Driving (FSD) that drives fully autonomously. However, you may have seen a human safety monitor sitting on the front row to observe the car’s autonomous movements and help the user understand the car’s features. The final launch is expected to remove these safety monitors from the car.
