xAI continues to release new Grok updates, and the next version, Grok 4.20, will bring major upgrades over the recently launched AI models.

Back in July, xAI released the Grok 4 model family, including a base and a Heavy model. It has achieved 15.9% on ARC-AGI-2 and outperforms GPT-5 High on Humanity’s Last Exam.

At that time, Elon Musk, Founder and CEO of xAI, teased Grok 4.20 as the next major release. After months of teasers and trailers, the AI maker released two new models, Grok 4 Fast, with a 2-million-token context window. It reduced token usage by 40% and costs by up to 98% compared to Grok 4. It ranked first on LMSYS Search Arena and excelled in efficiency for enterprise workflows.

The Grok 4.1 enters the pipeline with a focus on conversational intelligence, emotional understanding, and reduced hallucinations. It topped LMSYS Arena at 1483 Elo in Thinking mode and improved creative writing and empathy.

Another fast model release, Grok 4.1 Fast, launched as a tool-calling-optimized version with Agent Tools API for web browsing, X data access, and code execution. It achieved 93% accuracy on t2-Bench for agentic workflows, outperforming Claude Opus 4.5 and Gemini 3 Pro, while providing price efficiency.

Grok 4.20 features

This new model has yet to debut, but Musk has given us some good insights about its upcoming features.

The xAI founder called this update a major improvement over Grok 4.1 Fast, which is already superior to Gemini 3 in terms of reasoning. He said that the upcoming version will perform even better on the t2-bench for tool use. He implies superior agentic performance and cost-efficiency.

Furthermore, Grok 4.20 will bring advanced language generalization, for example, extending Python logic to other languages for software engineering tasks. These are just a few upgrades of this new model, and there’s a lot more to come when the model officially goes online.

According to Musk’s recent statement, xAI will release Grok 4.20 in about 3 to 4 weeks.
