Rivian shares first footage of R2 SUV assembly line
Rivian has generated considerable excitement among enthusiasts by releasing the first footage of its R2 mid-size electric SUV directly from the assembly line at the Normal, Illinois, plant.
The company showcased the manufacturing process in full swing, emphasizing how the vehicle’s streamlined architecture facilitates efficient, high-volume building. The shared footage offers a look into various assembly stages. Advanced robotic systems methodically lower and secure large structural elements and battery modules into the chassis frameworks.
Partially completed bodies progress along automated conveyors, revealing protective wraps, emerging interior structures, and prominent R2 branding on rear hatches. Additional scenes depict powertrain components being handled and integrated, while skilled technicians install doors and side panels on vehicles in different phases of completion. The combination of precision automation and hands-on expertise illustrates Rivian’s commitment to scalable production without compromising quality.
This development represents a major advancement in the R2’s path to market. The model was initially showcased to the public and local stakeholders, sparking widespread interest and a surge in pre-orders.

Subsequent efforts involved close collaboration between design and engineering teams to refine the vehicle, the setup of a specialized pilot line for process optimization, and comprehensive testing across diverse real-world conditions, including challenging terrains and climates.
Numerous validation vehicles were constructed and subjected to extensive mileage accumulation, while the factory underwent rapid expansion, from open land to fully equipped production space, to prepare for larger output.
Positioned as a more accessible entry into electric adventure vehicles, the R2 aims to expand Rivian’s reach significantly. With production lines and assembly on track, Rivian could move with the plan to start the R2 deliveries by this year.
