Tesla makes FSD transfers flexible before March deadline

Tesla has announced a major change in its Full Self Driving (FSD) Supervised transfer between old and new vehicles by making its terms flexible for customers.

The FSD transfer allows existing owners to move their purchased FSD capability from a current Tesla to a new one, helping reduce the cost of upgrading. The key change in this update extends flexibility for customers.

Orders for a new Tesla vehicle now only need to be placed by March 31, 2026, to qualify. Previously, delivery had to occur within a similar time window. This adjustment gives buyers more time to complete the process without rushing the vehicle delivery.

Under the program, transferring FSD means the feature moves entirely to the new vehicle. The original car loses access shortly after the new one’s delivery, typically within 48 hours. Owners who want FSD on both vehicles can instead purchase it separately for the new model. Once transferred, FSD remains attached to the new vehicle permanently, even if sold to another owner later.

However, Tesla has some terms and conditions around FSD transfers. The new vehicle order must be placed by the deadline. The current owner must be the legal owner of the existing Tesla with FSD bought outright.

Old and new vehicles must be registered under the same Tesla account. Additional terms must be accepted before delivery. The program excludes leased vehicles, business or commercial orders, and pre-owned purchases. Also, the transferring vehicle cannot have pending cancellations, buybacks, or unpaid balances.

The FSD transfer doesn’t allow the Luxe Package on the 2026 Model S, Model X, or Cyberbeast. However, Tesla factors this into trade-in valuations for those vehicles.

This program benefits long-term Tesla owners who invested in FSD early, when the technology was still in its early stages. It provides a way to carry the feature forward without repurchasing, which can cost thousands. For those planning an upgrade soon, the extended order window removes previous pressure tied to delivery dates.

This announcement also comes at a time when the EV maker has decided to end the outright purchase of FSD by February 14, 2026. Afterwards, the user will only be able to buy monthly subscriptions.
