OpenAI CTO, Mira Murati has resigned from the AI company and CEO Sam Altman has penned a message online about the technology officer’s departure.

“It’s hard to overstate how much Mira has meant to OpenAI, our mission, and us all personally. I feel tremendous gratitude towards her for what she has helped us build and accomplish, but I most of all feel personal gratitude towards her for her support and love during all the hard times. I am excited for what she’ll do next.” Altman replied to Mira’s post on social media site X.

The latest departure comes amid the company’s decision to take decision-making power from the non-profit board and give it completely to the for-profit board.

It’s reported that OpenAI is planning to restructure its core business into a for-profit corporation that will no longer be controlled by its non-profit board.

With this new change, Altman is expected to receive equity for the first time in the for-profit firm. It could be valued at $150 billion after this major restructuring. Bloomberg reported that Altman could get up to a 7% stake in the AI company.

This plan is still under consideration with lawyers and shareholders and a final decision about the restructuring is yet to be made official.

The AI company was founded in 2015 as a non-profit research organization and added the for-profit OpenAI LP entity in 2019 as a subsidiary of its non-profit arm.

With the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, the company has started growing its for-profit arm with new investment led by software giant Microsoft.
