xAI founder, Elon Musk, has announced that the company is building macOS and Windows apps to offer services for X (formerly Twitter) and the Grok AI chatbot.

X, the social media platform, is used widely on the web and mobile platforms, including iOS and Android. On the other hand, Grok AI is available via X, Grok.com, Android, and iPhones. Musk said that the social media site cannot live on the browser forever, therefore, an expansion is needed.

X has a Mac app and a Windows app, but these are not functioning as they should. For example, the Windows app is simply a web app that relies on the Microsoft Edge browser.

A standalone app will allow the company to serve a specific user base with a tailored experience and rollout similar changes across different platforms at once.

To achieve this task, xAI has posted a new software engineer job role for macOS, and here is information about the job role.

  • Develop and optimize Swift-based Mac applications at scale.
  • Build infrastructure for large-scale data pipelines, asset management, and UI prototyping.
  • Develop and implement quantitative evaluations for application performance, usability, and reliability.
  • Optimization and code refinement for real-time responsiveness.
  • Develop and implement strategies for handling complex, long-running tasks in macOS environments.
  • Maintain a deep focus on building a lovable user experience everywhere from prototyping to deployment.

The company will prioritize applicants with previous experience in the following

  • A proven track record of building SOTA Mac applications end-to-end alone or as part of small teams
    Shipping high-performance desktop applications across a variety of devices and platforms
    Track record of releases, publications, and/or open source projects related to SwiftUI, AppKit, and macOS
    Strong systems and engineering skills in development frameworks like Swift, Rust, and adjacent
