xAI Grok gets Companions feature, adding animated characters to voice conversations
xAI is rolling out Companions, a new feature for the Grok app, which brings animated characters for users who want to make their conversations more interactive. The feature is part of the new Grok iOS app update released today on the App Store.
A companion could best fall in the category of AI personality, and these are fused within the Grok app. These personalities are an addition to the voice mode but with a dedicated space, where the visualized character can move and react according to the conversation.

Grok app is currently showing three companions:
- Ani, an anime-style female character
- Rudy
- A male character, who will come later

Users who want to enable companions must enable this feature from the settings. Afterward, it will appear on the side menu, where you will see the available companions.
When you launch a companion, the app will transition to a separate UI featuring the selected character. This screen has some controls, including Ask, Stop, Capture, and even a text input area. It works like a voice or text interaction; all you need to do is input your prompt, and the companion will reply.

According to the information, the Grok companions feature is available only for Premium+ or SuperGrok subscribers. Meanwhile, the developers haven’t announced this feature rollout for Android.
I believe companions bring a more entertaining way to use voice mode, and it also shows Grok’s role from a text-based, truth-seeking AI to a more emotionally engaging or entertaining companion. It aligns with trends in AI companionship apps like Talkie AI or Intimate AI Girlfirned, which provides emotional support and customizable personalities.
