Grok AI app is getting the Companions feature, including a companion mode, a place where you meet animated AI avatars and conduct a desired conversation.

Grok companions are based on their AI voice model, but with interactive visualizations and voice tones that are different from the voice only mode.

How to get an AI companion

You will have to grab a SuperGrok subscription from grok.com or dedicated app or buy a Premium+ tier on X. This feature only works with Grok’s iOS app, you can download the latest version from Apple’s App Store with Companions support.

Once downloaded, navigate to the settings menu to enable this feature. Return to the home screen, and go to the side menu to see available companions. The initial ones are:

  • Ani – A young female anime character
  • Rudy – A stuffed animal character with a dual personality
  • Chad (coming soon)

How to use

Tap on an avatar to enter conversation mode with a dedicated space featuring the selected Grok companion. The main character is showing idle emotion, which changes as soon as you start the conversation via voice or text. You can also record your conversation or capture screenshots with on-screen buttons.

The characters will express themselves through different animations to facilitate their voice replies, which makes the entire scene very interactive. For example, Ani, one of the companions, can throw kisses and dance. Similarly, she can change the background of the screen to tell you a story.

On the other hand, Rudy has a dual personality and replies in the same way as the user request. When a user asks it to tell a story for children, its tone will be gentle and soft but it can also go to verbal assault as soon as a user talks in the same way.

Conclusion

The new companion mode comes after the recent release of Grok 4 family, its most advanced AI models. It appears that the company is utilizing the latest models to power companions. Also, the feature is only available for iOS users, which means an Android version is pending.
