xAI will release a major upgrade for Grok Code next month
xAI Founder and CEO, Elon Musk, announced a major upgrade to Grok Code scheduled for February 2026. This update aims to enhance the model’s capabilities, enabling it to handle many complex coding tasks in a single generation step, referred to as “one-shot” processing.
The announcement builds on the model’s current dominance in AI coding tools, as highlighted in the quoted post from DogeDesigner, which noted Grok Code Fast 1 achieving the top position on OpenRouter’s weekly AI model leaderboard with approximately 420 billion tokens processed.
Grok Code Fast 1, introduced by xAI in August 2025, is a reasoning model designed for agentic coding workflows. According to xAI’s official news release, it features a new lightweight architecture trained on a corpus rich in programming data and real-world coding datasets, such as pull requests. Key features include high-speed inference with innovative serving techniques and prompt caching that achieves over 90% hit rates in partnerships.

It supports versatile tasks across the software stack, excelling in languages like TypeScript, Python, Java, Rust, C++, and Go. The model is adept at tool usage, including grep, terminal commands, and file editing, making it integrable into IDEs for tasks ranging from project creation to bug resolution with limited supervision. It is available via the xAI API at $0.20 per million input tokens, $1.50 per million output tokens, and $0.02 per million cached tokens and has been offered for free on platforms like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Cline.
One key benchmark result from xAI’s evaluations is a score of 70.8% on the full SWE-Bench-Verified subset, assessed using an internal harness alongside public benchmarks and human feedback focused on real-world usability. The AI firm has emphasized ongoing improvements, with updates released frequently based on community input.
Past X posts from Elon Musk and xAI document rapid adoption, including surpassing 2.2 trillion tokens in monthly usage on Kilo Code and maintaining leadership on OpenRouter, where it often exceeds the combined usage of competitors. This upgrade represents the next step in evolving Grok Code Fast 1 toward more efficient coding assistance.
