xAI expanded its Colossus 2 supercomputer facility in Memphis, Tennessee, by installing approximately 600 Tesla Megapacks shows a new report from Epoch AI. This addition provides over 2.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of energy storage, positioning the site as one of the world’s largest single battery energy storage systems. The installation, valued at around $585 million based on Tesla’s pricing, supports the power demand of advanced AI training.
Colossus 2 is described as the most powerful supercomputer currently in operation, designed to handle massive computational workloads for xAI’s AI development efforts.
The facility relies on a large cluster of Nvidia GPUs, requiring stable and substantial electricity to run continuously without interruptions. The Megapacks, Tesla’s utility-scale battery units, store energy and release it as needed, ensuring reliable operation even during grid fluctuations.
