On January 27, 2026, at 11:53 p.m. ET, SpaceX conducted a successful launch of its Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida with the GPS III-9 mission for the U.S. Space Force.

The GPS III-9, also known as Space Vehicle 09 (SV09), is part of the ongoing upgrade to the Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation. This satellite series, produced by Lockheed Martin, provides enhanced features.

It offers three times greater accuracy and up to eight times improved anti-jamming capabilities compared to earlier models. The new M-Code signal supports secure military operations while maintaining benefits for civilian users worldwide.

SpaceX described it as the company’s third rapid accelerated mission for the US Space Force and the fastest National Security Space Launch turnaround to date. The team integrated and launched the payload in just 41 days.

The Falcon 9 first-stage booster completed its fifth flight. It had previously supported missions including KF-01, IMAP, NROL-77, and one Starlink deployment.

After stage separation, the booster landed successfully on the droneship A Shortfall of Gravitas in the Atlantic Ocean. This recovery demonstrates the reusability that helps reduce costs and increase launch frequency.

The satellite honors Ellison Onizuka, a former NASA astronaut lost in the Challenger tragedy. Naming it after him recognizes his contributions to space exploration.

This launch adds to the growing GPS III fleet, improving global navigation reliability. The system supports everyday applications like mapping and timing, as well as critical defense needs. SpaceX’s role in these missions shows its growing involvement in national security space operations.
